The ICC World Test Championship is the premier championship for Test cricket. The tournament formally started on 1 August 2019 with the beginning of the 2019 Ashes series between England and Australia. With the beginning of this tournament, now there is one pinnacle tournament for each of the three formats of the sport, Test, One Day International and Twenty20 International.
The inaugural edition of the tournament will run till June 2021, with the second edition scheduled to start just after the end of the first one and run till 2023. The final of the tournament will be played at the Lord’s in England. If the final is a draw or a tie, then both the teams will be declared joint winners. Each team will have to play against six other teams, with three matches each at home and away. Each series will carry a maximum of 120 points.
South Africa along with other eight Test-playing nations will be taking part in this tournament. South Africa will play a total of 17 matches in the World Test Championship campaign. Nine of these will be at home where the other eight will be away. The home matches will be against Australia, England and Sri Lanka. The away matches will be against India, Pakistan and the West Indies. They will not play against Bangladesh and New Zealand.
South Africa will start their campaign in World Test Championship with the away series against India. The series will consist of three matches. India vs South Africa schedule will run from 2 October 2019 to 23 October 2019. Looking at the live cricket score and current performance of both the team, this series will prove to be a challenging task for the Proteas. But winning or a match or two will help them in the Championship as each win will earn them 40 points in the series against India.
The second series of the campaign will be against England at home. It will be a four-match series and a tough one for sure. The series will run from 26 December 2019 to 28 January 2020. After this, they will play a two-match away series against the West Indies in July 2020. South Africa will be favourites for this series. By this time, the World Test Championship will be at its half-way mark and then we will be able to see the top three to four teams who will most likely make it to the final.
The second half of their Championship campaign will start an away series of two matches against Pakistan in January 2021. In the same month, South Africa will host Sri Lanka for a two-match series. Both these series will be a good opportunity for the team to score a lot of points and boost their position. Their ICC World Test Championship will conclude with a three-match home series against Australia in February 2021, roughly four months before the final of the Championship.
